The importance of oral health surveys
Choi Choong-Ho

Abstract
The field of Dentistry is becoming gradually deeper and more diverse with the advancement of science and changes in dietary habits. Moreover, people are being provided with more Dentistry-related information than before, and an improvement in economic level is leading to growing interest in oral health. In keeping with this increase in interest and improved accessibility of dental care, there has been a change in people¡¯s actual oral health and awareness, and we need to investigate and assess this series of oral health-related changes with care and attention. In order to assess these changes in oral health, the national government has been conducting a regular National Oral Health Survey every 3 years, and the results are being used as supporting data to improve the oral health of the population. The Journal of Korea Academy of Oral Health has published a large number of research results analyzing the data from national-scale oral health surveys that have been conducted so far, as well as studies on efficient and effective survey methods. There have also been continual reports of data analyzing the results of oral health programs, and comparing them with national data. In order to improve the management of oral health, it is very important to analyze useful data obtained from national surveys like this, and to provide supporting data that can be referenced for actual oral health programs. I think that it will be very important to continue such national oral health surveys in the future, and expect that, based on the results suggested by these surveys, somewhat more diverse oral health programs will be developed and implemented, and be able to contribute to improving the oral health of the nation.
